For POI sponsored athlete Charlie Hammond the 2018-2019 season has been simply fantastic. At the start of the season the 21 year old and his team set their sights on a target of riding 23 winners during the season. At the end of the season Charlie achieved 25 winners. A dedicated athlete, Charlie added “it’s always nice to surpass your target”.
The 2018-2019 season was Charlie’s busiest to date. Including 4 wins at Market Rasen and 3 at Worcester. In fact the season yielded winning rides on a variety of horses and trainers. The highlight of the year for Charlie was 2 Cheltenham winners: “something you can only dream of and to have two in the same season was phenomenal, and I can’t thank everyone enough for getting me there”.
The winning formula
As with any sport, the secret to winning is no secret. But Charlie knew that to have the opportunity to ride better horses he had to be as fit as the horses he rides. Charlie noted: “you’re only as good as the horses you ride, and that breeds confidence”. The 2018-2019 season has taken tireless dedication, a great stable and personal sacrifice.
This season Charlie’s aim is to ride out his claim, with a bit of luck and injury free season there’s every chance it could happen.
In Jump racing, the Conditional jockey’s allowance can be reduced to 5lb after they’ve ridden 20 winners and 3lb after 40 winners. Once they have ridden 75 winners, the jockey loses their claim and becomes a fully-fledged professional. In Flat racing, Apprentice jockeys have the same weight allowances, but the winning milestones lie at 20, 50 and 95 respectively.
Fresh into the 2019-2020 season and Charlie has already had two wins. On the 19th May at Market Rasen he completed his 2nd win of the new season by 5 lengths riding Moidore. To ride out his claim Charlie needs another 31 winners … maybe his next will come this weekend at Ffos Las or Fontwell?
